We take inspiration from craftsmen: people who practice the steady, lifelong exercise of a vocation and maintain a certain distance from worldly distraction. Every day is devoted to incremental improvements in small details of their craft that, over a lifetime, can yield a product that is far superior to those of scaled manufacturers.  This superiority manifests not just functionally, but aesthetically.  Typically, only a small number of the product is produced, and often only a select few customers truly appreciate it.

 

We are naturally pulled to live the lives of investing craftsmen.  This pull has led us to be physically distant from Wall Street, to spend our days in quiet contemplation, to focus on knowing a few companies and value creation models extremely well, and to purposely keep our AUM and team small.
